| Hello to all! I would need a technical advice: for a new Mainsail on standard Capri22: what are the real measures of the luff and the foot during the preparation of the sail? Because it is necessary to think that the sail is going to stretch in time. |

Hi Dave,
My new Mainsail has a luff of 25 ' 7 ' 1/2 " and a border of 9 ' 8 ", Is it a problem? What distance it stays in you of the head of the mast? |

| Seems your luff and foot might be just a little bit long , due to age? I hardly think an inch or so over new specs would be a problem in this instance, although my girlfriend may dissagree in another matter altogether. |

When measuring a used sail, you will never get an accurate measurement. Sails change deminsions with age, and just like us humans, they actually shrink with age, not stretch. A mylar sail will shrink up to 1.5% per year, and will shrink when rolled up and stored. Dacron does not shrink as much as Mylar, but it will shrink. The boltrope in the sail will shrink with age also. The "P" measurement which is the distance from the top of the boom to the black band at the top of the mast is 26.00', and the "E" Measurement is 9.75'. We build the main at the maximum measurement so when the sail shrinks a few inches, it will still fit the boat. As for the foot length we design the sail to be just short of 9.75' from behind the aft edge of the mast. If you measure from the tack ring to the clew ring, you will come up with a measurement close to 9.6' as the tack of the sail is about 1.5" behind the mast, That didtance is known as a "Tack Setback". This is a measurement that we make when measuring for any new mainsail. Our Capri 22 mainsail is designed with a "Floating Tack" where you do not use the tack pin that is located at the front end of the boom. The tack will have a "Slug" the tack which slides below the tack fitting on a MarkI boat, and then tension the sail with the cunnigham. Most sailmakers already have access to the measurements for a Capri 22 standard rig, and tall rig.
Remember, trying to measure a sail is a very tricky. _________________ Steve Ross

Interesting, I wonder if my Quantum main is supposed to be rigged similarly. I have been using the tack hook to hold the tack, but it often falls free when I tension the cunningham. I've even removed the halyard shackle so that I can hoist the main higher.
Is this common among Capri sailmakers or unique to Ullman? Does this slide go below the thumbscrew slide that constrains the boom? |
