My thoughts on growing the Capri 22 Class:
We now have more than one thousand Capri 22's that have been built by Catalina Yachts in one form or another, but it looks like only about 10% of them are active in the class. We,as a class, should be able to increase that number to 30-35%. Although these numbers are low, this web sight is helping to grow the class just by its presence. So here are some other thoughts on how the members can help this class grow.
#1- Have a rigid set of class rules and weights that every body must follow. Keep in mind that a person who buys a new boat must feel that he can be fairly competitive out of the box. Keep the boat a dual-purpose boat.
#2 - Have members post race results even if they have to post their own results. Remember there are other interested buyers looking at our web site.
#3 - If possible, set up a secure section on the web site so members of the class have access to the complete membership roster and info.
#4 - Let's make it easy to form a fleet with standard guidelines that all fleets must follow and set up districts.
#5 - Here is the tough one. Find more ways to include non-racers in the class. Maybe we should have a cruising chairman for each district.
#6 - The class members need to be willing to put their boats on the trailer and travel. We need more communication on regattas and cruises for the fleets, even if you only travel to one regatta or cruise a year. Remember you are helping to show the boat and buld another fleet.
#7 - Take people sailing. The Capri 22 is a great sailing boat. If you get people on the boat, it will sell itself.
#8 - When you see a Capri 22 for sale, try to sell it. You can help your own cause.
#9 - Establish a working relationship with the dealer in your area and them involved.
#10 - Have fun! If you are having fun, other people will want to join you. _________________ Mike Wilson

Mike, thank you for your interest in the Capri 22 National Association.
#1 Three years ago, Fleet #1 in Mission Bay rewrote the class rules, as for the class was in dire need of updating the class rules. At that time, there was no Capri 22 Class Assoc. to speak of. We know have about 90 boats registared on the website, along with nearly 200 more boats that have joined the Class assoc. We are on the right track I feel. The class rules will be reviewed in the very near future, and all input is welcome.
#2 It is the responsibility of Fleet Captains, and Regional Directors to forward results to be posted. Even if they are PHRF results, that is better than nothing.
#3 As for a secured area for Class Assoc./owners is great idea, and we will discuss with Patrick Gudat (Webmaster).
#4Starting a fleet is very easy if you have 5 or more boats in your area.
#5 As being devoted owners of a Capri 22, we all have to promote our boats to interested people and get them involved. This will keep the value of our investments in fun worth more.
#6 Travelling across coutry with a Capri 22 is a major task. When promoting a Capri 22 Sanctioned event, the host should (must) have a charter boat available for interested parties.
#7 Always take interested people sailing. This boat does sell itself, and is very affordable, and veresitile.
#8 When a boat is put up for sale in your area, you should try to find a new owner in your area to keep the boat at home. A small fleet can't afford to lose a boat.
#9 Your local dealer is very important to your fleet. It is also imprtant to support your dealed in after-market equipment.
#10 FUN!!! This is what it is all about, whether it is racing, cruising, or just a daysail, always keep it fun. If it isn't fun, why do it?
Mike you have many great ideas, many of which the Capri 22 National Association has been working on. I hope you can be a Fleet Captian in your area, as for, you are also on the right track. Keep up the good work.

I own one of them.
Willoughby Bay, just east of the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel, is one of the best small boat basins in the southern bay. Flat water, at least 9' water, usually a breeze. In addition, they have public ramps at the site.
Would love to help with a regatta here. Possibly combine with other OD's.

I think the single biggest problem we have is getting people to actually attend the Regattas and how to address the wing keel vs. fin keel issue that makes everyone happy.
I think we need to start and open forum on the subject and come to an OD agreement that everyone can live with.
Here's a start from my times racing against the wings with a fin.
The fin points higher upwind (but is not faster), the wing is faster downwind (less wetted surface). Pretty simple. The boats are very close and truely comes down to crew work, not the keel. We give the wings a 3/sec mile break normally but tried a 6/sec mile break for the 2005 Capri 22 Cup - but didn't get enough boats to attend.
It's frustrating to try and support the Capri 22 fleet when wing keel boats won't allow you to attend their OD regattas. This needs to end and be written into the OD rules for any NA supported event. Other designs have worked around the same issues with success, so can the Capri 22.
Hats off to Patrick and the IVY Capri 22 fleet for welcoming us to race with them this October with our fin keel. |

Can I resurrect this thread?
Is there a Capri 22 fleet "hidden" somewhere around Atlanta?
I've looked and Google'd, but no luck so far.
What IS the closest fleet to me?
Cheers, Ed Humphries

Ed,
We have no fleets in the Southeast--however, I know we have a few boats in North AL, Nashville TN, South Carolina, and now Atlanta. Maybe we could try to work with this and get a south east regatta scheduled. _________________ Doug Fox

I would like to start a capri 22 fleet in the Seattle area. I know of a few that are rentals, but are there more capri's up here. If we expose the boats during events like duck dodge or the winter polar/goose bump races I am conviced we can get a solid group together
Please email if you want to discuss starting a fleet in Seattle.

I thought I would restart this topic on the site. I think that it is time for the Capri 22 National Association to rejoin U.S. Sailing. I think that the benefits of joining would be in the interest of all Capri 22 owners.
#1 It would provide more exposure for the Capri 22s, in that there could be a direct link from U.S. Sailing to our web site.
#2 The Capri 22 would be featured at times on the Harken One Design section in Sailing World.
#3 This is the big one, any exposure the Capri 22 can get will help retain the value of all Capri 22s.
#4 It would increase the pride of ownership in Capri 22s.
#5 It would increase the number of boats on the starting line.
#6 It would help our manufacture and insure that Capri 22 and parts would be built for a long time.
There are more benefits to this than I have listed and all for a cost of $250 dollars. If you would like Rocky Mountain Fleet 12 belongs to our regional sailing association. If we run it through here our U.S. Sailing dues would be $150.00. _________________ Mike Wilson
